| Summary of Issue | The Enhanced CMV Inspection Standard checklist requires mudflaps on the truck tractor regardless of the type of trailer coupled as part of the configuration. However, there are some truck tractor and trailer combinations that do not require and do not allow for the clearance of mudflaps when the trailer is attached (ie: car carriers with a low center of gravity). |
| Justification or Need | The Enhanced CMV Inspection Standard checklist should allow for the truck tractor to not have mudflaps when the configuration with specific trailers does not provide sufficient clearance with the mudflaps attached. There is not a FMCSR that prohibits the operation without mudflaps under these circumstances. |
| Request for Action | The Enhanced CMV Inspection Standard checklist should be updated to allow the CMV to pass the enhanced inspection when mudflaps have been removed to allow for sufficient clearance due to the trailer configuration coupled with the truck tractor. |
