Summary of Issue

Ford and others have introduced a safety feature in their newer models that have an electronic parking brake, that won't allow driving with the electronic parking brake activated, unless overridden/bypassed. Once in gear and throttle applied, the electronic parking brake will disengage.

Justification or Need

Inspectors have unnecessarily placed vehicles OOS as they are not testing the electronic parking brake properly when indeed the system is working as designed, without fault.

Request for Action

Vehicle Committee to review with industry and an Inspection Bulletin created as needed so that inspectors are advised. A manual override/bypass (holding parking brake switch on) while in gear seems to be the proper test of this system. This is not Ford specific, but seems to be the most commonly checked roadside, for the heavier duty, hydraulically braked vehicles.
