| Summary of Issue | During a recent inspection of the drive shaft on a 2008 Ford F350 I observed welds on one of the yoke ends . I also noticed welds on the bearing cup assemblies which kept the yoke ends from moving along the u joint. I looked at the OOS criteria and did not see anything that addressed the issue. I also contacted the fleet manager at a local Ford dealership and showed them the attached photographs. I was advised that the welds were not a proper repair, and if the welds were to fail, the yoke ends would un-couple causing the driveshaft to drop. |
| Justification or Need | There is nothing in FMCSR's or the Out of Service Criteria that addresses welds / improper repairs on driveshaft yoke assemblies. |
| Request for Action | Because the welded portion of the driveshaft yoke are not a proper repair, review the attached photographs of the welded driveshaft yoke to determine if a violations exists. If a violation does exist determine if it should be included in the out of service criteria. |
