OOSC, Part II, Item 10. Steering c. (2) Front Axle Beam and all Steering Components other than Steering Column (Including Hub) - Welded Repair on Tie-Rod Bar

One of our inspectors has identified a violation on 2500/3500 Dodge trucks. Apparently there is a flaw in the adjustment sleeve/jam nuts for the tie-rod bar on this late model Dodge trucks. The recall appears to be for 2014-2018 2500/3500 models. Dodge has issued a recall and to fix the issue, they are welding the jam nuts to the adjustment sleeve (pictures attached). This seems to be prohibited by the 2019 NAS OOS Criteria, Pg. 53, Item c. (2). Front axle Beam & All steering components other than steering column(including hub) ...(2) any obvious welded repair(s).

We would not presume to say we are the only jurisdiction that has identified this issue, however, the inspector that brought it to my attention has identified no less than 8-10 over the last couple of weeks. Since this is apparently a widespread issue with Dodge trucks, we would speculate this problem will only continue to grow. The vehicle owners who are adhering to the recall, may not realize that the "recall fix" from Dodge is in direct conflict with the OOS Criteria.

We believe since the manufacturer's remedy to this particular issue is "welding" on the steering components (in violation of the OOS Critera). We would like to see some sort of guidance from CVSA as Dodge is estimating approximately 660,000 vehicles may be under this recall. It appears this could involve a large number of CMV's, subject to the regulations and highly likely to be placed out of service due to this issue.
