| Summary of Issue | POLICE/PRIVATE ESCORT OF OVERSIZE/OVERWEIGHT PERMIT LOADS As more states/provinces grapple with budget shortfalls, etc. we’re now seeing what may be beginnings of major changes at state/province level as to what states/provinces require for escorts. 2 examples – Pennsylvania to require some previously police required escorts to be replaced by newly trained/certified private pilot escorts. Ontario about to embark on an even more dramatic switch of most or all police escorts to be replaced by private. While we certainly respect and understand the need and benefits, there may also be some challenges/concerns in need of collaborative discussion in the interest of achieving maximum safety and uniformity between states/provinces. As more states/provinces may begin to consider similar changes, SC&RA would like to request of CVSA, AASHTO, National Pilot Car Association (NPCA) and other effected stakeholders a sort of formal discussion perhaps resulting in recommendations/best practices for such a process. |
| Justification or Need | We're hopeful these issues may be placed on your April Size & Weight Committee for discussion and ultimate recommendation of "Best Practices" by the CVSA Board of Directors to all member states/provinces. |
