Summary of Issue

I have a question that I cannot find a answer. I recently had a vehicle that was inspected and the Inspector wrote, "oil and/or grease leak, pinion seal on axle." What does CVSA consider a leak? Some seals or manufactured to use the lubricant to condition the seals, leaving a damp mark around the area. This is not a leak. The military uses classification of leaks, class I, class II, class III, with a explanation for each. A definition of leaks needs to be published to stop confusion and inaccurate violations. If a classification already exists please send me the information. Thank you.

Justification or Need

This is an issue that must be clarified. There are to many inspections with violations that may not be violations at all. The military uses the attached classification when air loading vehicles. During the airloading leaks are taken very seriously. I see no reason why these leak classifications would not work for the commerical vehicle inspections to determine accurate violations.

Request for Action

Clarification, for everyone involved, Law Enforcement and Companies alike.
