| Summary of Issue | Attached are photos of lead ingots transported in a van trailer. Each ingot is approximately 955 kilograms. The carrier used 2\"x3\"x8' boards nailed to the deck as bracing to prevent sideways and rearward and forward movement. The nails were not fully hammered into the lumber (about half of the nail is showing.) Issue: The National Safety Code Standard 10 prohibits the use of nailed wood blocking for the purposes of securing timbers when transporting metal coils with the eyes lengthwise or crosswise. If the use of nailed wood blocking is prohibited when transporting metal coils why do we allow it as a sole means of securement for blocking when transporting similarily heavy articles in enclosed van trailers. . |
| Justification or Need | Clarification - How do other jurisdictions assess whether this is an appropriate securement system? (eg. quantity/size of nails used) If this was considered insecure, what would be appropriate remedy so that this vehicle can continue it's journey |
