| Summary of Issue | This is in reference to the u-joints on CMVs. We have had several units where the u-joints are loose or the u-joint hangers are loose or missing. There have been several crashes were the driveshaft has come off the units and hit other vehicles. There is nothing in the regulations that addresses this issue. On several units the u-joint themselves are worn, where the u-joint moves inside the cradle. Others the u-joint hangers, which hold the u-joint onto the driveshaft, transmission, or differential are loose/missing. I feel that this is a major violation that needs to be looked at. |
| Justification or Need | There is nothing in the regulations that addresses this issue. On several units the u-joint themselves are worn, where the u-joint moves inside the cradle. Others the u-joint hangers, which hold the u-joint onto the driveshaft, transmission, or differential are loose/missing. I feel that this is a major violation that needs to be looked at. |
| Request for Action | Develop a petition letter to have the regulations amended to include missing or loose u-join hangers. Also, possibly added to the OOS criteria. |
