| Summary of Issue | Add \"any tire that has been subjected to fire\" to the North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria (OOSC). |
| Justification or Need | I recently encountered a brake fire which then led to the tires catching fire. The fire was extinguished before the tires were visibly damaged, however, see info from Tire industry rep. Anytime anyone suspects a tire has been subjected to high heat, especially if a fire has been extinguished on it, the tire MUST be removed ASAP. At 325 degrees F the components within the tire begin to break down and come apart. The wheel is also damaged and both the tire and the wheel are safety hazards looking for a victim. I am attaching an article I wrote for Crain's Tire Business in 2007 on commercial truck tire fires. I believe it will answer most of the questions you and your vehicle inspectors have on this subject. Peggy J. | Request for Action | Add "any tire that has been subjected to fire\" to the OOSC. Include a note, such as: \"Accompanied by clear evidence or reliable eyewitness testimony that the tire has been on fire or subjected to direct flame impingement." |
