Summary of Issue

In Part II of the North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria (OOSC), item 8. STEERING MECHANISMS, g. Ball and Socket Joint (2) any motion, other than rotational, between any linkage member and its attachment point of more than 1/8 inch (3mm) measured with hand pressure only. (393.209 (d)49 CFR Appendix G to Subpart B, Minimum Periodic Inspection Standards, Section 7. Subsection g. Ball and Socket Joint (2) Any motion, other than rotational, between any linkage member and its attachment point of more than 1/4 inch.

Justification or Need

Clarification is needed on why the OOSC uses 1/8 inch when CFR 49 Appendix G allows up to 1/4 inch of non rotational motion in a ball and socket joint.

Request for Action

Need an update to the OOSC or a note in the OOSC explaining which measurement to use or petition FMCSA to amend Appendix G to reflect the OOSC.
