| Summary of Issue | New EPA regulations require all heavy duty diesel engines mfg. on or after January 1, 2007 to reduce nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. To comply with this regulation, mfg. have installed diesel particulate filters that substantially increase exhaust system temperatures. Some of these systems will use fuel injected into the particulate filters to aid with the regeneration process. |
| Justification or Need | The new requirement could have a fuel line attached to the exhaust sys. which would conflict with Part II. 3. c. This would also add a new component within the fuel sys. for Part II. 5. a. (1). |
| Request for Action | Add "Note" below Part II. 3. c. that reads as follows; "New EPA regulations require all heavy duty diesel engines mfg. on or after January 1, 2007 to reduce nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. To comply with this regulation, mfg. have installed diesel particulate filters that substantially increase exhaust system temperatures. Some of these systems will use fuel injected into the particulate filters to aid with the regeneration process." Include "Exhaust system particulate filters" in () to the list of fuel sys. components in Part II. 5. a. (1). |
