| Summary of Issue | Loose Intermediate Shaft to Steering Gear Input Shaft Joints need to be back into the OOSC. |
| Justification or Need | When loose steering clumn U-joints were removed from the OOSC in May 2001, an unintentional result was that a vehicle could no longer be put OOS if the connection between the intermediate shaft and the steering gear input shaft (yoke-coupling) is about to come off. Vehicles are encountered where the attachment at the connection between the steering gear input shaft and the intermediate shaft is loose. This may lead to a separation at this yoke-coupling, although it will require an unusual circumstance to bring this about. More likely and equally serious, the splines on the input shaft and in the mating intermediate shaft yoke-coupling socket can get damaged leading to serious slipping. |
| Request for Action | Put the loose intermediate shaft to steering gear input shaft into the OOSC. |
