| Summary of Issue | How do we properly handle a broken spring in a spring brake section of a brake chamber? |
| Justification or Need | OOS item 1.a..(2) concerns defective brakes and mentions "springs" as a defect. This reference is to the devices used to retract the brake shoes upon brake release. These springs are different and located within the brake chamber housing. These broken springs can reduce the effectiveness of the associated service brake. This occurs when the broken spring interferes with free movement of the brake pushrod. |
| Request for Action | If a parking spring is broken and evident what should be done in regards to the OOSC? Broken parking brake springs interfer with the service brake operation and can either impace either brake stroke or the ability of the affected brake to apply. |
