| Summary of Issue | Enhanced Inspection – Section 9(4)(c) Tires & Wheels: This section calls for a defect on a tire inflation system if it is “leaking air.” Modern Automatic Tire Inflation Systems (ATIS), intentionally inflate or deflate tires based on axle weight to optimize performance, fuel efficiency, and tire longevity. This could be unintentionally written up as a defect. Reference: Operational Policy 15 – 1(b)(3) “There are advanced tire inflation systems that allow tire pressure to not only increase when the load over an axle is increased, but also to exhaust tire air when the weight is reduced over an axle. This is normal operation for these systems and should not be documented as a violation.” |
| Justification or Need | These normal operations could be mistaken for a defect under the current enhanced standard. This could cause unnecessary downtime and repairs. |
| Request for Action | The adding, “Note: Air exhausting from control box is normal system operation and is not a defect.” |
