| Summary of Issue | Upon conducting a level 1 inspection on a dump truck with lift axles, I observed that, when one of the lift axles was in the lifted position, it would actively rub against the driveshaft. This led to a reduction in material in both the driveshaft and the lift axle components. |
| Justification or Need | A search of the North American Out of Service Criteria determined that it was not an out of service violation. A search of the FMCSA regulations determined that it was not a violation. There is no violation for active rubbing against a driveshaft or loss of material in the driveshaft, only cracks, twists or loose components. It is my belief that the loss of material in the driveshaft and active rubbing against another part compromises the integrity of the driveshaft. |
| Request for Action | I am requesting a change to the out of service criteria to reflect an out of service violation for the active rubbing against a driveshaft with a reduction in material. |
