| Summary of Issue | Damaged drain valve on air reservoir tank and proper documentation of a violation. The drain valve was damaged and a piece of air tubing stuck inside the drain valve. The tubing was crimped over and held loosely with a zip tie. When the zip tie was removed, the tubing leaked air. |
| Justification or Need | Very little documentation exists for air reservoir tanks and the plumbing of air lines (hoses) and other air related accessories into or onto the air reservoirs. |
| Request for Action | I request review of the issue I encountered based on the photos submitted and further interpretation of the issue. Is the issue a violation and if so what would be the correct violation to document on inspection report. At what point does an air line, brake hose, or tubing stop becoming part of the air braking system. Are accessory air lines plumbed into an air reservoir (for airing up tires or such) subject to the same standards as other brake hoses and tubing such as improperly spliced or improperly installed with hose clamps that are not DOT approved. |
