Summary of Issue

Recently, one of our inspectors in western Pennsylvania conducted a level one inspection on a Tri-Axle dump truck and discovered a dangerous condition that’s not currently covered in the Out of Service Criteria. Specifically, the drive shaft between Axle #2 and #3 was sometimes rubbing a cross member under the truck. The officer could not determine if this was being caused by a condition of loading or if the truck was going over un-even ground. The attached picture makes it clear that the driveshaft was at times rubbing a cross member.

Justification or Need

CVSA should consider a change to the OOS criteria that prohibits the driveshaft from coming into come into contact with any part of the vehicle.

Request for Action

CVSA Should consider placing this in section 4. of the Vehicle OOS Criteria.
