Summary of Issue

A Level 1 CVSA inspection on a 5 Axle combination was conducted. During the inspection on the tandem axle trailer, both axles were equipped with a leaf spring suspension as well as an air bag suspension. On axle 5 left, the air bag was missing. There was a crimped air line (closed by zip tie) which used to supply air to the missing air bag. The Out of Service criteria in Section 9(b)(8)does include missing airbags as an Out of Service condition. I could not put the vehicle OOS under 9(b)(8).

Justification or Need

In Alberta, we do have legislation which identifies it as a violation if the air suspension is as follows: the air bag or air line shall not be missing, cut, bruised,crushed or leaking and the air bag must not be cracked to the braid or mounted insecurely.

Request for Action

I request that the Out of Service Criteria be updated to include missing airbags to Suspensions - Section 9(b)(8);
