| Summary of Issue | 'Drive Cams' being installed inside motorcoaches are mounted in a manner that the device is in violation of 49 CFR 393.60(e) - "(e) Prohibition on obstructions to the driver's field of view. (1) Devices mounted at the top of the windshield. Antennas, transponders, and similar devices must not be mounted more than 152 mm (6 inches) below the upper edge of the windshield...". We have been in communication with FMCSA for interpretation/application of the regulation. |
| Justification or Need | Urgent. We have several carriers who have installed these devices and several others waiting on ruling. Carriers who have had them installed are in violation of the regulation. The device has many benefits, however if the device is mounted in compliance with the regulation, then some of the functions will not be useable. Need for some sort of waiver/petition for rule change/etc. to allow these devices to be used on motor coaches. |
| Request for Action | Need for some sort of waiver/petition for rule change/etc. to allow these devices to be used on motor coaches. |
