| Summary of Issue | Rear impact guards has become a hot topic and inspectors need the training and knowledge to inspect these during Level I and II inspections. If it is added into the Inspection Steps, it can be covered during the CVSA Part B course and give inspectors the training that it is an important part of the inspection procedure. |
| Justification or Need | Rear impact guards should be checked during Level I and Level II inspections, but it is not listed in the NAS Level I and Level II Inspection Steps. Although it is not listed as a critical item, violations of a rear impact guard will preclude a vehicle from receiving a CVSA decal and so it is important that these are being inspected roadside. |
| Request for Action | Add to NAS Level I and Level II inspection procedures: STEP 21 INSPECT REAR OF TRAILER REAR IMPACT GUARD Check for damaged or missing rear impact guards. Check for compliance with the height and width requirements for the appropriate year of trailer manufacture. |
