Summary of Issue

This is a new kind of brake lining system. The brake linings are attached differently, there are 4 segments that are clamped to the shoe. Guidance is required on this type of brake.

Justification or Need

The floating grippers secure the lining by wedging into the sides. The grippers bolt to the shoe and extend up the side of the lining to the point that they clamp tightly into it. Neither rivets nor adhesive directly bond the lining to the shoe.

Request for Action

Issue information to enforcement officers to educate them about these new types of linings. Inspectors need to recognize this.
