| Summary of Issue | Meritor Automotive wrote a letter to Gee Tee Transport stating that the CVSA inspection procedure for inspecting fifth wheel movement should not be done. |
| Justification or Need | The CVSA inspection procedure calls for the driver to apply pressure to the king pin by alternately pulling forward and backing up. Meritor stated that damage can be done to the fifth wheel jaws, clutch, driveline, transmission or drive axles from shockload (emphasis added). Part of Meritors reasoning relates to the use of ceramic clutches. |
| Request for Action | Consider changing the procedure if it is determined that this is possibly damaging to the truck. |
