Summary of Issue

Step 31 of the NA Level I Inspection Procedure.

Justification or Need

Some officers are mistakenly adjusting air pressure to 115 pis to compensate for the air loss on activation of the service brakes. The initial air brake pressure should be 90-100 psi before brake pedal activation - the procedure is confusing. It suggests you activate the brake pedal and then adjust the air to 90-100 psi.

Request for Action

Update the procedure. Inspection procedure should read "Ensure system pressure is between 90 and 100 psi" and then "Have the driver apply service brakes".
